New accelerator designs: NIMMS
/ Vretenar, Maurizio (CERN) ; Benedetto, Elena
Purpose
This article summarises the presentation given at the “Hadrontherapy: status and perspectives” event.
Methods
Structure, methodology, and objectives of the Next Ion Medical Machine Study collaboration are introduced. Its four Work Packages are: small synchrotrons for particle therapy, curved superconducting magnets for synchrotrons and gantries, superconducting gantry design, and high-frequency ion linacs. [...]

“Particle therapy - future for the Baltic states?” – synthesis of the expert workshop report
/ Paļskis, Kristaps (Riga Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Korobeinikova, Erika ; Bogorada-Saukuma, Dace ; Camarda, Anna Maria (CNAO, Milan) ; Taylor, Rebecca (CERN ; Imperial Coll., London) ; Benedetto, Elena ; Mamis, Edgars (CERN ; Latvia U.) ; Radziņa, Maija ; Ērglis, Andrejs (Latvia U.) ; Adliene, Diana et al.
Background Baltic States remains one of the few regions in the Europe without a dedicated particle therapy center. An initiative since 2021 has been started by CERN Baltic Group on a novel particle therapy center development in the region in partnership with CERN NIMMS collaboration. [...]

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A COMPACT SYNCHROTRON-BASED FACILITY FOR CANCER THERAPY AND BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH WITH HELIUM AND PROTONS BEAMS
/ Vretenar, Maurizio (CERN) ; Angoletta, Maria Elena (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Taylor, Rebecca (Imperial College (GB)) ; Tranquille, Gerard Alain (CERN) ; Benedetto, Elena (SEEIIST Association (CH)) ; Torims, Toms (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Palskis, Kristaps (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Sapinski, Mariusz (Paul Scherrer Institute (CH)) et al.
Thanks to their superior dose conformality and higher radiobiological effectiveness with respect to protons, helium ions are considered as the new tool of choice in the fight against cancer using particle beams [...]

Comparison of 352 MHZ Linac structures for injection into an ion therapy accelerator
/ Nikitovic, Lazar (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Torims, Toms (Riga Technical University (LV)) ; Vretenar, Maurizio (CERN)
In the frame of ongoing initiatives for the design of a new generation of synchrotron-based accelerators for can-cer therapy with ion beams, an analysis of linac designs has been started, to address a critical element with a strong im-pact on the performance and cost of the accelerator. The goal is to identify alternatives at lower cost and a similar or possibly smaller footprint than the standard 217 MHz in-jector presently used in all carbon therapy facilities in Eu-rope. [...]

IMPACTS OF STRONGLY CURVED MAGNETIC MULTIPOLES ON COMPACT SYNCHROTRON DYNAMICS
/ Norman, H X Q (University of Manchester, Manchester, UK and Cockcroft Institute, Warrington, UK and University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia) ; Appleby, R B (Univrsity of Manchester, Manchester, UK and Cockcroft Institute, Warrington, UK) ; Sheehy, S L (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Australia) ; Benedetto, Elena (SEEIIST Association (CH))
Superconducting curved magnets can reduce accelerator footprints by producing strong fields (>3 T) for applications such as carbon ion therapy, however the effect of strongly curved magnetic multipoles and fringe fields on accelerator beam dynamics is not fully understood. [...]
